Gunman fires shots outside US embassy

A gunman was shot and captured by Lebanese soldiers after a shootout outside the US embassy near Beirut on Wednesday that injured a security guard, officials said. Local media reported that there was a gunfight involving at least one attacker. The Lebanese military said that soldiers shot an assailant, who they described as a Syrian. A judicial official said the assailant carried out the attack "in support of Gaza".

1 killed, 30 trapped in mine pit collapse

A mining pit collapse in Galkogo village of Niger State in central Nigeria killed one person and left 30 others trapped, the state's emergency agency said on Tuesday. The incident, at the underground gold mine, occurred on Monday after heavy rains softened the soil around the pit, triggering the collapse.
