IRAN

Helicopter carrying Raisi suffers accident

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday suffered an accident and made a rough landing in the northwestern province of East Azarbaijan, reported state IRIB TV. It added rescue teams were on their way to the scene of the incident, but unfavorable climatic conditions and heavy fog were slowing their efforts. Meanwhile, the official news agency IRNA said that an accident had occurred to one of the helicopters of the convoy carrying Raisi and his teams.

Public security minister nominated as president

The Communist Party of Vietnam nominated Minister of Public Security To Lam to be Vietnam's president, according to the Vietnam News Agency on Saturday. The party also nominated National Assembly permanent vice-chairman Tran Thanh Man as the assembly chairman. Both are now Politburo members. Lam, 67, has been the public security minister since April 2016.Man, 62, has been the NA permanent vice-chairman since April 2021.

23 migrants missing while sailing to Italy

A total of 23 Tunisian illegal migrants have gone missing while sailing to Italy, according to a statement by the Tunisian National Guard released on Saturday. "The group of 23 Tunisian migrants left the coast of Korba in the northwestern province of Nabeul late at night on May 3 in an attempt to cross the Mediterranean to enter Italy illegally," the Tunisian National Guard said in a statement posted on its Facebook page. Tunisian security units have arrested five organizers of this immigration attempt.

Defense forces foil 'attempted coup'

An "attempted coup" was suppressed on Sunday by defense and security forces in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, said Brigadier General Sylvain Ekenge, the spokesman for the Congolese army. "The army reassures that the situation is under control and asks Kinshasa residents to freely go about their business," he said in a brief message broadcast on public television, specifying that several perpetrators of the act had been arrested.
