Shanghai Oriental Art Center unveiled a new sculpture in its lobby on Thursday night, while also announcing an open call for sculptors worldwide.

The sculpture named Golden Home sits in the central area of the lobby at the theater, featuring stories of memories of the Valley, a musical by Chinese Canadian architect Dr Peter Guo-hua Fu, creator of the sculpture.

SHOAC is a masterpiece by French architect Paul Andreu, who is widely known in China for creating a series of landmark projects such as the Terminal One of Shanghai's Pudong Airport, and the National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing.

"Being an architect myself, I take this opportunity to pay tribute to the great architecture of SHOAC, by presenting my work that combines architecture with theater and sculpture," said Fu at the launch ceremony of his sculpture on May 16.

SHOAC in collaboration with KFS Design International Inc also announced the kickoff for a competition of "Sculptures for the Theater", calling for young artists all over the world to submit their theater-themed sculptures. Twenty winners will be selected every year over the coming five years, when the sculptures will be showcased at SHOAC.

The event was celebrated with a recital from Canadian composer and pianist Steve Barakatt, which marks the first leg of his China tour.

Jennifer May, the Canadian ambassador to China praised Fu's contribution to the cultural exchange between China and Canada at the ceremony, and hoped that there would be more frequent cross-cultural communications between the younger generations.
