Countermeasures taken against arms sale

The Foreign Ministry has taken countermeasures against two US defense companies for taking part in the United States' arms sale to the Taiwan region. The two companies are General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems, the ministry said in a statement issued on Thursday. The companies' movable and immovable property, as well as all other assets in China will be frozen. Their high-level management will be denied China visas, and will not be allowed to enter the country.

Knife attack leaves 1 dead in Bordeaux

A man armed with a knife fatally stabbed one person and wounded another on Wednesday in the French southwestern city of Bordeaux, a government source briefed on the attack said. The attacker was killed by police. Police do not initially think the attack was terrorism-related, BFM TV reported. The Bordeaux prosecutor's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The attack took place near the banks of the Garonne River in central Bordeaux. One video on social media showed police standing over a body covered in a white blanket. Reuters could not immediately verify the video.

Musk to meet Modi over new Tesla plans

Tech billionaire Elon Musk said Wednesday he is to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India, following suggestions the Tesla boss will soon announce major investment plans in the country. He made the announcement on his social media platform X, formerly Twitter, without giving a date for his visit. The country begins voting in six-week-long elections on April 19, in which Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party is widely expected to sweep a third term in power.

3 injured as gunfire disrupts Eid event

A joyful celebration of the end of Ramadan devolved into panic on Wednesday in Philadelphia after rival groups exchanged gunfire, leaving at least three people injured and hundreds of parents and children to flee in search of safety. The annual Eid al-Fitr event, held outside a large mosque in the city's Parkside neighborhood, came to a sudden end when some 30 shots rang out at about 2:30 pm, Philadelphia police said. Five people were later taken into custody.
