WARSAW -- A car struck a crowd at a tram stop in the northwestern Polish city of Szczecin on Friday afternoon, injuring 19 people, including six minors, police and local media said.

The incident occurred at Rodla Square in Szczecin at around 3 pm (1400 GMT) when a man drove a car into the crowd for unknown reasons. The motorist continued driving before crashing into three other vehicles, the Polish Press Agency (PAP) reported, citing Pawel Pankau, an officer from Szczecin's municipal police headquarters.

The driver, a 33-year-old Polish national, attempted to flee after the accident but was stopped and detained by police.

Two of the victims are in serious condition. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Earlier reports from PAP said that 12 people were injured, citing fire service sources in Szczecin.
