Smartphone shipments in the Chinese market reached 271 million units in 2023. The figure was 73.63 million units in the fourth quarter of last year, showing an increase of 1.2 percent from the same period of 2022, ending a ten-quarter decline, according to the latest report from market consultancy IDC on Jan 25.

Currently, the market demand mainly comes from high-end consumers in first, second, and third-tier cities and the best sellers are the flagship products such as the iPhone 15, Huawei Mate 60, Xiaomi 14 and Vivo X100.

In 2023, the market share of high-end smartphones with prices over $600 was 27.4 percent, increasing 3.7 percentage points year-on-year, and low-end smartphones with prices below $200 was 27.5 percent, growing 5.2 percentage points year-on-year in the country.

IDC pointed out that while the high-end consumers maintain their purchasing power, more mid-level users begin to upgrade their devices to flagship products to extend the replacement cycle.

Creating 5G smartphones at a thousand yuan ($139.74) price point with nice appearance and ensuring smooth performance in social media, shopping and short videos, will attract more low-end consumers, said IDC.
