A restaurant owner in eastern China is being hailed a hero after his quick thinking and words of comfort helped save a customer from taking his own life.

On Dec 18, Shi Yingfang, owner of a lamb soup restaurant in Fuyang, Anhui province, noticed a troubling message on a food delivery order. The customer, a previous patron, had written: "This is my last meal before I go. Please make it delicious and serve it hot."

Concerned, Shi attempted to call the customer but received no answer. He then messaged the customer through the delivery platform, offering support and alerting local police.

"It's OK if this is a joke," Shi wrote. "There is still love in this world, and no matter what happens, it should not be the reason to give up on life."

Unfortunately, the customer only responded with a wish for a good meal and gratitude.

Realizing the urgency, Shi continued to engage with the customer while police and a delivery rider rushed to the customer's address. With no response to knocking, rescue personnel listened at the door and heard a man crying.

After persistent persuasion, the man opened the door and revealed he was contemplating suicide due to relationship problems. Thanks to Shi's initiative, the authorities were able to intervene and prevent a tragedy.

Reflecting on the incident, Shi expressed his empathy for the customer, believing the note was a cry for help. "Life and death can be just a thought away," he said. "Whether it's a joke or not, we should help."
