China released its first group of important habitats for terrestrial wildlife on Wednesday.

The list, issued by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, comprises of 789 important habitats for terrestrial wildlife, covering about 82 percent of the nation's key protected terrestrial wildlife species.

The designated habitats are classified into six categories based on the significance of the terrestrial wildlife species, population size and the importance of habitat location. These include areas for the survival and reproduction of precious endangered species, as well as regions for the distribution of wildlife populations.

The designations involve habitats, breeding grounds and migratory routes for 565 species of protected wildlife at national class I and II.

The administration plans to add more habitats to the list as long as their conditions improve.
