Generous gesture: Lottery winner donates millions to public welfare organization
In a noteworthy turn of events, a lottery winner surnamed Guo, hailing from Puyang in Henan province, arrived in Zhengzhou, the provincial capital, to officially claim his substantial prize of 86.62 million yuan ($12 million) on Monday, a month after striking it lucky.
In a commendable display of generosity, Guo decided to donate a substantial portion of his winnings, contributing a staggering 53 million yuan on-site to the Henan Sports Development Foundation, a public welfare organization.
Guo recounted that his windfall came about unexpectedly when he casually passed by a lottery station. Feeling adventurous, he decided to spend 100 yuan on a random selection of the China Sports Lottery's Super Lotto.
Recognizing the excessiveness of the prize money and mindful of the responsibility that accompanies such wealth, Guo expressed his commitment to continued hard work.
"I still need to work hard; I must work," asserted Guo, dispelling any notion of complacency despite his newfound fortune.
He disclosed his plans to invest in properties within local school districts, ensuring the best possible education for his children. Additionally, Guo aims to channel his winnings into business ventures, steadfastly pursuing further success.
The grand prize was officially announced on Nov 4, marking it as the highest-ever lottery win in the history of the Henan Sports Lottery.
This development follows a notable win in Nanchang, provincial capital of Jiangxi province earlier this month, where an individual secured a remarkable 220 million yuan from the China Welfare Lottery. He allegedly spent 100,000 yuan ($15,000) to purchase 50,000 tickets of the same number at a lottery booth. After the draw that evening, all of the tickets he purchased won, for a total prize of 220 million yuan.
The substantial windfall triggered debates and public concerns about the possibility of insider trading. Responding to these concerns, the Jiangxi provincial department of civil affairs has initiated an ongoing investigation to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the significant lottery victory.
