DALLAS, Texas — A man suspected of killing four people, including a 1-year-old boy, in a shooting at a Dallas home fatally shot himself during a chase with law enforcement several hours later, authorities said on Monday.

Byron Carrillo, 21, fled the home after the shooting late on Sunday afternoon and shot himself in a parking area after trying to evade a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper chasing after him.

Officers responding to the home in the far southeastern area of the city on Sunday found five people had been shot. Three adults died at the scene, and the 1-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were taken to a hospital, where the 1-year-old died and the teenager was treated and released. Police said there was also a 13-year-old girl inside the home at the time of the shooting, but she was not injured.

In October 2021, Carrillo was indicted on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for threatening two of those killed in the shooting with a firearm in August 2021, court records showed.

Police said Carrillo had an ankle monitor, but cut it off at some point before or immediately after the shooting.

Court records also showed that Carrillo lived next door to the house where the shooting took place.

Dallas police spokeswoman Kristin Lowman said what led to the deadly shooting is still being investigated.

In Washington state, a man fatally shot his wife, their two adult daughters and his brother before killing himself at home, authorities said on Monday.

Authorities received a call at about 1 pm on Sunday requesting a welfare check at a home in Vancouver, Washington. The person who requested the welfare check had received a text message from the suspected shooter indicating that he had "harmed others" at the home, the Clark County Sheriff's Office said.

The message was sent more than four hours before the call for a welfare check was made, but the person who requested the welfare check did not see the message until later, the sheriff's office said.

Horrible cases

At least 203 people have died this year in mass killings in the United States, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University in Boston.

The 39th mass killing this year happened on Sunday in New York when a 38-year-old man used a knife to kill four relatives, including two children, and stab another woman and two police officers before one of the officers fatally shot him.

According to the database, mass killings are defined as incidents in which four or more people have died within a 24-hour period, not including the killer.
