Taiwan director Li Tsung-hsi's play, The Homecoming, was staged at the Beijing Comedy Theater on Nov 29 and 30.

It revolves around the retired soldiers, who traveled from Taiwan to their hometowns on the Chinese mainland to reunite with their families in 1987. The year marked the beginning of the thawing of relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, as communication resumed.

One of the play's lead actors, Ben Lee, was born in Taiwan and is known for his roles in movies, TV dramas and plays.

The Homecoming opened the performance season launched by Beijing's Bureau of Culture and Tourism and the Dongcheng district government, where the Beijing Comedy Theater is located.

Running until January, it will take 23 theatrical productions to 10 cities, including Shanghai, Tianjin, Nanjing and Shenzhen, in 43 shows.

Other highlights will include the Protagonist, which is produced by the Shaanxi People's Art Theater, Peking Man by the Beijing People's Art Theater and the Chinese adaptation of 12 Angry Men by the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center.
