The first batch of migratory birds recently arrived at the wetlands of Dongting Lake in Hunan province for this year's wintering.

The natural environment at Donggu Lake in the Quyuan management area has improved. As part of the Dongting Lake wetland, the lake has been attracting more bird species, such as white cranes, little swans, cormorants and wild geese.

More migratory birds are expected to come to the area later this month and the number is likely to exceed past years. The birds will spend winter at the wetland and will likely stay until next spring.

As the second-largest freshwater lake in China, Dongting Lake plays an important role in the overall ecological balance of the Yangtze River basin.
