Epidemiologist dies from cancer, age 60
Wu Zunyou, one of China's top epidemiologists, died of illness on Friday at the age of 60. According to National Business Daily, Wu died from pancreatic cancer. Born in 1963, in Huangshan, Anhui province, Wu served as the chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention from 2017. He had devoted himself to the battle against COVID-19 from early 2020. He was elected as a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in January.
Man sentenced to death for stabbing spree
Hou Xiaofei, who went on a stabbing spree and injured 15 people in a hospital in Shanghai last summer, was sentenced to death by the Shanghai No 2 Intermediate People's Court on Friday. On July 9, 2022, Hou traveled to Ruijin Hospital with knives and stabbed patients and their family members as well as medical workers, causing serious injuries to six individuals, including four minors, and minor injuries to nine others. The court said Hou performed the act as he was resentful of society following a failed investment.
