The Palestine-Israel situation has remained fragile after direct peace talks between the two sides stalled in 2014. This timeline illustrates some major confrontations between the two.
July-August 2014: Israel launched airstrikes on hundreds of Palestinian militant targets in the Gaza Strip, leaving more than 2,200 Palestinians dead.
May 14, 2018: Massive protests broke out in many Palestinian cities against the United States after it moved its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Clashes with the Israeli army left 58 Palestinians dead.
March 2018-December 2019: The Great March of Return began at the fence between Israel and Gaza on March 30, 2018, but ended in bloodshed.
April-May 2021: During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a series of clashes erupted between Israel and Palestine.
Jan 3, 2023: Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir entered Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem. Jews call it the Temple Mount, garnering criticism among Palestinians.
Jan 27, 2023: Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or PIJ, militants in Gaza launched two rockets into Israel in retaliation to an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank.
May 9-13, 2023: Israel launched an operation against the PIJ in the Gaza Strip, killing three of the group's top commanders. In response, the PIJ fired at least 1,000 rockets, some deep into Israel.
July 3-4, 2023: The Israeli military waged a large-scale military operation on the Jenin camp, targeting militants. According to official figures, 13 Palestinians and an Israeli soldier were killed.
July 27, 2023: Ben-Gvir visited Al-Aqsa, or Temple Mount for Jews, again.
Oct 4, 2023: Dozens of Israeli settlers forced their way into Al-Aqsa.
