China extends $17b in subsidies to those in need

China has made significant efforts to support the basic livelihood of vulnerable groups, officials from the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.
According to Liu Xitang, the director of the ministry's social assistance department, a total of 126.5 billion yuan ($17.35 billion) has been spent from January to June this year on providing subsidies for those facing difficulties. This has effectively ensured the basic living standards of those in need.
He made the remarks at a news conference on Tuesday.
Tang Dengjie, the minister of Civil Affairs, also highlighted the ministry's continuous efforts in enhancing the social assistance system.
