17 workers killed in railway bridge collapse

At least 17 laborers working on a railway bridge being built across a ravine in India's eastern Mizoram State were killed when it collapsed on Wednesday, officials said, with others reported missing. Video footage posted by Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga showed a metal frame that had toppled off towering columns into a wooded valley below. The Indian Express newspaper quoted a police officer as saying that 17 bodies had been recovered and "many others" were missing. It was not possible to immediately verify the reports of people missing.

Flood forces evacuation of 100,000 people

Around 100,000 people have been evacuated from flooded villages in Pakistan's Punjab Province, emergency services said on Wednesday. Several hundred villages and thousands of acres of cropland in the central province were inundated when the Sutlej River burst its banks on Sunday. The head of Punjab's government, Mohsin Naqvi, said monsoon rains had prompted authorities in India to release excess reservoir water into the Sutlej, causing flooding downstream on the Pakistani side of the border. The summer monsoon brings South Asia 70-80 percent of its annual rainfall between June and September every year.

Hollywood union says proposal not enough

Hollywood studios and streaming services on Tuesday released the terms of a revised proposal to striking writers, but the union urged members to continue picketing as the new offer failed to address all their concerns. The Writers Guild of America had walked off the job on May 2 after negotiations reached an impasse, and were later joined by members of the Screen Actors Guild, halting productions across Hollywood and costing the California economy billions of dollars.
