Parliament's removal decision applauded

China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday that China welcomed and highly praised the Central American Parliament's decision to remove the Taiwan region as "a permanent observer". The six-nation Parlacen gathered in the Nicaraguan city of Managua on Monday and approved 73 to 32 in a vote to include China as its permanent observer. Speaking at a regular news briefing, Wang said this once again proves that standing up for the one-China principle is an unstoppable trend of the times and the right thing to do. China is ready to develop friendly cooperation with Parlacen on the basis of the one-China principle, he said.

Trump to surrender over Georgia charges

Former US president Donald Trump plans to turn himself in on Thursday in Georgia to face racketeering and other charges stemming from his bid to overturn the 2020 election. "I'll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be ARRESTED," Trump, who remains the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, said on his Truth Social platform on Monday. He described the indictment as a politically motivated effort to derail his reelection campaign.

Firefighters find 18 bodies after wildfire

Greek firefighters found the bodies of 18 people in an area of northeastern Greece ravaged by a major wildfire burning for days, authorities said on Tuesday. Greek police activated the country's Disaster Victim Identification Team to identify the bodies, which were found near a shack in the Avanta area in the northeastern Alexandroupolis region, said Ioannis Artopios, a spokesman for the fire department, in a televised statement.

Niger's status halted over military takeover

The African Union Commission has suspended Niger from the pan-African bloc until normal constitutional order is restored in the country following the latest military coup. The decision to suspend Niger from AU membership was made by the Peace and Security Council of the AU Commission during its latest meeting that dwelt upon the situation in the Western African country, the AU said in a statement issued on Tuesday. The military in Niger detained President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
