A man in Lianjiang, a county-level city in Guangdong province, was detained by police for repeatedly slapping his infant son.
The case captured public attention on Tuesday after a video was posted online showing the man slapping the child more than 20 times and shouting "stop the noise." The baby's face became red and swollen.
The local authorities found the man, surnamed Deng, had a quarrel with his cohabiting girlfriend surnamed Chen who left home, according to a statement issued by the city government on Wednesday night.
Deng became upset for having to take care of their son alone and sent the video to Chen on July 4 to force her to return home.
The baby was found to be normal in a medical check and is being cared for.
