On Tuesday, the first day of sanfu, the hottest and dampest period of the year, wild animals at Chongqing Locajoy Theme Park in Chongqing's Yongchuan district were treated to a relief from the summer heat.

Zoo keepers prepared delicious and juicy watermelons, crushed ice, vegetables and grass for African elephants, black bears, chimpanzees, hippos, giraffes and lemurs.

It is the animals' first bite of watermelon this summer, the park said.

Meanwhile, the park uses multiple methods to bring down the temperature. Animals are given regular showers and there are pools in which they can cool off. Their enclosures are also equipped with spray hoses, sunshades, air conditioners and electric fans.
