Launching an international publishing and communication think tank for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is not only conducive to telling the story of the GBA to the world and promoting its culture, but also to strengthening the construction of China's international communication capability, according to media and publishing insiders.

"News media and publishing industries are important forces in promoting cultural development and playing an important role in deepening cultural exchanges, mutual learning and promoting Chinese culture to the world," said Xing Zhigang, a member of the editorial board of China Daily.

Xing made the remarks during the launch ceremony for the International Publishing and Communication Think Tank of the GBA, which was held on the sidelines of the 29th Beijing International Book Fair on Thursday.

Chen Jianwen, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and chief of the Publicity Department of the Committee, and Qu Yingpu, publisher and editor-in-chief of China Daily, witnessed the launching of the think tank, which was established by the Guangdong Publishing Group and the China Watch Institute of China Daily.

Since 2018, the China Watch Institute of China Daily and the Guangdong People's Publishing House, affiliated with the Guangdong Publishing Group, have published a series of multilingual books focusing on the 40th anniversary of reform and opening-up, poverty alleviation, and green and low-carbon development.

"With the concept of promoting cultural integration between the GBA and the world, we will devote ourselves to research in areas such as global publishing, international cultural exchanges, promoting the Belt and Road Initiative, international development of the GBA, and internationalization of talent and enterprises," said Tan Juntie, chairman of Guangdong Publishing Group and Southern Publishing and Media Corporation.

The signing ceremony for the Arabic version of The Sleeping Giant Awakes, a book focusing on global views on China's transformation after four decades of reform and opening-up, was also held on Thursday.

The book was planned by the Guangdong People's Publishing House and the China Watch Institute of China Daily, with nearly 40 international renowned experts and scholars invited to contribute their views, showcasing an objective, real and three-dimensional China, according to Xiao Fenghua, deputy general manager of the Southern Publishing and Media Group and president of the Guangdong People's Publishing House.
