Digging was completed on Tuesday for a 45.7-kilometer underground utility tunnel running through five main districts of Guangzhou, Guangdong province.
The tunnel will be used for pipelines and cables for water, power and telecommunications. It will improve management of the utilities through its improved underground environment. It will also eliminate repeated road digging, which has been the norm for pipeline and cable maintenance.
About 90 kilometers of such tunnels have been put into service in Guangzhou, with 220 kilometers under construction, according to the city's housing and urban-rural development bureau.
