According to the philosophical classic Tao Te Ching, Laozi, the founder of Taoism, observed that da xiang wu xing, the grand view or image, has no form. In his paintings, Cheng Qiang seeks to visualize this eternal Taoist belief through a nonfigurative approach and a rich palette. The artist from Jiangsu province has managed to present Eastern spirituality and a sought-after immensity and eternity in the formless state.

The highly-saturated hues on his canvases reflect a tendency toward naturalism. Cheng's paintings now on show at the art center of Art News of China, until June 1, are a vivid demonstration of his exploration to add dimensions to the presentation of Chinese cultural traditions. Beyond the strokes and colors he looks for a state of spontaneity to find a spiritual haven. Cheng has donated two works on show to Art News of China.
