New York braces for possible tensions on Trump arraignment day

NEW YORK - New York City further reinforced its security measures ahead of the scheduled arraignment of former US President Donald Trump at a criminal court in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday.

More law enforcement staff and barricades were put in place around Manhattan Criminal Court and Manhattan District Attorney's Office in Lower Manhattan as well as at Trump Tower on the Fifth Avenue in Midtown.

New York State Court officers were seen on duty around the Manhattan Criminal Court, where Trump is expected to face criminal charges.

Crossroads close to the above-mentioned sites already came under tight control and pedestrians were subject to guidance and barricades on Monday.

Scores of people rallied around Trump Tower on Monday with big banners in support of Trump while Collect Pond Park opposite Manhattan Criminal Court was left quiet on the day.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams Monday warned against violence or vandalism from protesters, noting that if someone is caught participating in any act of violence, they will be arrested and held accountable.

"But to those planning to protest, the message is clear: Protest peacefully or you will be held accountable. We also urge all New Yorkers and visitors to use public transportation to avoid traffic delays and any potential street closures," said a post by the New York City Mayor's Office on Monday.

New York City planned to close streets intermittently, according to reports.

It's also reported that the New York City Police Department has sent a stand-ready order to about 35,000 officers.

"I think you'll see some spurts, and I think you'll see a few things going on here and there. But overall, I think New York's prepared for it," said Rich Herrera, a Florida-based podcaster who is traveling in New York City.

"If Trump is arrested on Tuesday, things could get pretty crazy," said Ashwood Kavanna, an artist who was prompting his work at Collect Pond Park.

Trump reportedly faces more than 30 counts related to business fraud in an indictment from a recent Manhattan grand jury related to his alleged role in organizing hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election, which was filed under seal.
