The Chinese embassy in Ghana recently spoke highly of the 11th Chinese medical team's assistance to the African country.

In a letter of commendation, the embassy said the team, from Guangdong province, fully carried forward the spirit of Chinese foreign aid medical teams — "fearing no hardship, being willing to sacrifice, saving the lives of the wounded and dying" — after its arrival in Ghana in March 2022.

The team overcame many difficulties in the COVID-19 pandemic, including local conditions such as lack of medicine to treat patients, the letter said.

The 11-member team, organized by Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, includes senior doctors in anesthesia, general surgery, cardiology, radiology, neurology, acupuncture, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology and other specialties.

They organized and launched many free clinics to help treat local patients, provide security for local Chinese-funded enterprises, help embassy staff members solve their medical problems and rescue and save the lives of many overseas Chinese.

The excellent medical skills and noble ethics of the Chinese doctors won the heartfelt affirmation and warm welcome of Ghana's health ministry, the China-Canada Friendship Hospital, Chinese-funded enterprises and institutions and overseas Chinese residents, the letter said.

The Chinese medical team also made valuable contributions to deepening the friendship between the governments and people of the two countries and to promoting the construction of a China-Africa health community, it said.

In addition to clinical work, the Chinese team has organized and carries out training of medical staff to improve local hospitals' medical treatment and service standards through lectures, special training courses and clinical diagnoses and treatment, it said.

Meanwhile the medical team actively carries out the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases in the West African country, it said.

The team's general surgery staff alone completed more than 300 operations, including more than 40 orthopedic surgeries and more than 200 obstetric surgeries so far.
