Peng Liyuan, wife of President Xi Jinping, called on the people of China and the Philippines to carry forward their traditional friendship and bring the bilateral relationship between the two nations to a new stage.

Peng made the remark on Wednesday when she joined Liza Araneta Marcos, wife of Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr, on a visit to the National Museum of China in Beijing.

Marcos, accompanied by his wife, is making a state visit to China, the first non-ASEAN country Marcos has visited as president.

Peng and Liza Araneta Marcos visited an exhibition held jointly by the National Museum of China and the Palace Museum on the theme of harmonious coexistence.

The exhibition features more than 400 cultural artifacts, vividly illustrating the profound historical significance of Chinese civilization, as well as the values of the Chinese nation in pursuing harmony and cooperation for the greater common good.

Peng and Liza Araneta Marcos recalled the history of exchanges between the older generation of leaders of the two countries, and said they were pleased with the development of bilateral relations.

Friendship and good neighborliness, along with seeking harmony among all nations, are the principles of Chinese civilization that guide the country's interactions with others, Peng said.

Noting that China and the Philippines are close neighbors, facing each other across the sea, Peng described the Philippines as an important country along the Maritime Silk Road. She said she hoped that the people of the two countries will carry forward this traditional friendship and continue to promote bilateral ties.

While thanking Peng for inviting her to visit the National Museum of China, Liza Araneta Marcos praised the exquisite collection of artifacts on display.

The Philippine first lady said she wants to have a better and deeper understanding of Chinese history and culture. The two peoples should carry forward the spirit of the Maritime Silk Road and continue to enhance mutual trust and friendship, she added.
