The prosecutor’s office of Georgia has brought charges against two individuals for committing aggravated group robbery and rape of a nun, the state body announced on Sunday.

In its statement the state body said on November 25, in Georgia’s city of Khashuri, the offenders had attacked the nun in the nunnery, demanding money and jewellery with threats of violence. After the refusal, they had physically assaulted and raped the nun.

The prosecutor’s office said the Georgian police officers arrested the offenders on Saturday and noted it would file a motion to the court for sending the defendants to imprisonment within the time limit established by law.

The prosecutor’s office stressed it would follow the “strictest criminal law policy” for such crimes and pledged all perpetrators of violence would be “severely punished” within the established law.

The crimes are punishable for a term of 15 to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.
