Fouad calls for rallying efforts to protect Arab environment, development rights

The Egyptian Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad called for rallying all official and unofficial international, regional and national efforts to re-formulate a multi-faceted system that would allow current generations to obtain their rights to development and clean environment, along with nature resources.

Fouad, who chairs the Executive Office of the Arab Environment Ministers Council, called for facing environmental challenges in the Arab world.

She was speaking at the opening session of the 33rd Arab Environment Ministers Council, which kicked off proceedings at the Arab League on Thursday, under the chairmanship of Morocco.

Fouad said Egypt chaired the previous session of the council meeting and acted to fulfill all obligations and reviewed the situation of the Union of Arab Banks and welcomed hosting the venue of the Arab Environment Facility.

Efforts are as well focused on taking all required steps to sign the Facility's Statute, she said, adding it is important to cooperate with all countries to lay down the Arab Strategy for Solid Waste, including plastics waste.

Egypt prioritised developing the Arab Strategy for Climate Finance in Arab countries, she said, adding the country commended efforts of ESCWA in this respect and urged Arab states to approve it.

Egypt, which is playing host to COP27, slated for this November in Sharm el-Sheikh, affirmed keenness on prioritizing needs of Arab coming generations at the heart of climate action, given the international climate gathering will a conference for implementation.
