Without much work experience and limited medical equipment, she was responsible for relieving all kinds of ailments suffered by the locals, from minor injuries to chronic diseases, such as arthritis and high blood pressure.

"I never wished to complete any magnificent feat or become an extraordinary person, but the locals of Xiaoqin Island gave me a sense of achievement. Although my abilities are limited, I like to try my best to help them," Wang says.

Despite the duration of the position initially being just three years, she chose to stay in the post and has since become the director of the island's health center.

Other doctors have come to work on the island for short periods, but for many of her years on the island, she has been the only doctor at the center.

Just like when she first decided to apply for the program, the decision to stay on the island didn't require much thought. "I was the only doctor here. I get along well with the locals, and they all care about me. It was natural for me to stay," she says.
