An exhibition titled "Dunhuang: Enchanting Tales for a Millennium" opened to the public on Wednesday at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, showcasing a total of 50 exhibits from the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in Gansu province.

The exhibits include artifacts, copies of silk paintings and reproductions of caves spanning over one thousand years.

The exhibition also selected over 100 copies of wall paintings from the grottoes, covering a wide range of subject matter and artistic styles across different dynasties and regions.

"It is a great honor for the HKSAR government to cooperate with the Dunhuang Academy to organize this large-scale heritage exhibition for the third time," Chan Kwok-kee, the Chief Secretary for Administration said at the opening ceremony on Tuesday. "The Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Dunhuang Academy have jointly planned this exhibition to bring Dunhuang's fascinating artifacts and cave stories to Hong Kong so that the general public can share in the peace and wisdom."

As a world-famous treasure of Buddhist art and culture, the Dunhuang Grottoes preserve magnificent murals and lifelike statues showing the spirit and life of the ancient Chinese people.

This is the third cooperation between the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the Dunhuang Academy, following two exhibitions - Dunhuang: Untold Stories in 2014 and Digital Dunhuang: Tales of Heaven and Earth in 2018.

The exhibition will last to November 21 at the museum.
