Ex-husband assaults wife, daughter after divorce, Shandong police say
A man seen forcibly dragging a mother and daughter into a house in video clips widely circulated online has been detained, authorities said.
In surveillance video clips, the man wearing a red raincoat was seen forcibly dragging the woman and her daughter into their house as she was opening her front door upon returning home with her daughter at around 6 pm on July 6, 2022. The mother and daughter could be seen screaming.
About 20 minutes later, a shirtless, tattooed man opened the door and was filmed by the surveillance camera checking the electricity meter before reentering the house.
The incident aroused widespread public concern for the safety of the woman and her daughter after the video circulated online last week.
It was not immediately apparent where the incident had taken place, but some netizens said it had happened in Guangning county in Guangdong province. On July 12, the county's public security bureau stated that it had verified that the incident had not taken place there.
The same day, the Laiyang public security bureau in Shandong province issued a statement saying that they had received a report from the woman, who is surnamed Jiang, at around 8 am on July 7.
The man, surnamed Zhan, is Jiang's ex-husband. The couple completed divorce proceedings on June 6, the statement said.
Zhan is said to have sneaked into the building where Jiang lives, and hid on the stairs while waiting for a chance to enter his ex-wife's house. After dragging the woman and her daughter into the house, he insisted that Jiang remarry him.
At around 10 pm, Zhan raped Jiang while their daughter was sleeping, and then fled.
The woman and her daughter are now safe. Zhan was detained on July 11, and the case is under investigation, according to Laiyang police.
