The annual Xini Festival — literally mud washing — kicked off on Saturday in Goulan Yao village of Lanxi Yao town, Hunan province.

During the festival, residents and tourists wave the dragon light, catch fish in the mud, watch Yao traditional performances and feast at night.

The festival falls on the thirteenth day of the fifth lunar month.

In days of old, the festival marked the end of spring plowing and included the washing of mud off people and cattle.

The annual festival is an intangible cultural heritage of Hunan province that attracts tourists.
