A J-7 fighter jet belonging to the People's Liberation Army Air Force crashed on Thursday morning in Hubei province's Xiangyang, with the pilot surviving, according to China Central Television. A local resident was killed, and two others were injured.

The State broadcaster's military news channel said on its Weibo microblogging account that the accident took place while the jet was in flight training.

During the training, the aircraft crashed into a residential block after the pilot ejected himself. The pilot and injured residents have been hospitalized. An investigation is under way, the report said.

So far, the PLA Air Force has yet to publish a statement or release about the crash.

The J-7 is part of a large family of second-generation fighter jets that were designed by Chinese engineers based on the Soviet Union's MiG 21. A great number of J-7s are believed to be in active service with the PLA Air Force and Navy.
