Hainan increases number of intl sister city pairs to 65

Since 2018, Hainan province has added 11 new international sister cities, with the number of its international sister citiy pairs increasing to 65, according to a press conference held on May 17 themed around Hainan's opening-up and the construction of an international tourism consumption center.

Dai Zhen, director-general of the Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province, detailed the breakthroughs made by newly-settled international organizations, consulates, and commercial institutions in the past four years. The Consulate General of Cambodia in Haikou opened in 2019. In addition, the Boao Forum for Asia Secretariat Haikou Office, the International Center of UNESCO Associated Schools, and the Haikou International Commercial Mediation Center have also settled in the province.

Dai said that after the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, Hainan and its sister cities cooperated with each other to overcome difficulties. The province received condolences and material assistance from more than 20 sister cities, as well as provided assistance to 29 sister cities in 22 countries with more than 700,000 medical masks, protective clothing, and other medical supplies.

In the past four years, Hainan has facilitated 30 foreign and Hong Kong-funded enterprises to settle in the Window to Global Trade in Haikou, introduced more than 50 foreign-funded projects like Time Warner and Harrow School, as well as assisted Yangpu in introducing a number of industrial projects.

In the future, the Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province will implement measures to promote the Hainan Free Trade Port to the world, as well as enhance exchanges and cooperation between Hainan and the world.
