A promotional event of leisure agriculture in Beijing's suburban areas was held on Friday in Pinggu district to promote rural tourism projects through livestreaming.

Beijing launched a leisure agriculture program in 2020 which aimed to design 10 boutique routes, build a hundred beautiful villages, upgrade leisure agricultural parks and renovate homestay households.

Cheng Xiaoxian, an official with Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said leisure agriculture in suburbs has been promoted and urban residents can experience rustic luxury through the program.

Yang Liguo, head of the Beijing agri-tech service center, and other promoters introduced the results of rural tourism projects such as viewing peach blossoms in Pinggu, visiting the Bee's World in Miyun district and experiencing farming in Tongzhou district.

Local agricultural products such as Pinggu fresh toon and Huairou chestnut were sold through livestreams during the event.

Zhang Shuyan, an official of Pinggu's Fangezhuang village, said the village usually sells 10,000 kilograms of fresh toon on e-commerce platforms during the harvest season from mid-April to mid-May every year.

The toon in the village is more nutritious than elsewhere because it is planted in red clay. More than 600 out of 700 households in the village have planted toon trees, she said.

"A farmer can earn 30,000 yuan ($455) by selling toons during harvest season," she said.

Lu Weihong, director with the Pinggu agriculture bureau, said the district has been exploring new ways to boost rural vitalization, such as developing smart agriculture and organizing online tourism activities.

Last year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs designated the first batch of 60 key counties nationwide to develop leisure agriculture, which integrates rural tourism and various industries.

These counties are rich in special natural and agricultural resources, and have concentrated on homestay and other tourism industries. Farmers involved in leisure agriculture in these counties have benefited more than the nation's average level, according to the ministry.

The ministry also announced 254 beautiful villages in China that have picturesque landscapes and leisure agriculture businesses.

So far, two districts in Beijing were among key counties to develop leisure agriculture and 40 villages are included in the national beautiful villages, according to the municipal agriculture bureau.

Kicked off in Pinggu, promotion events will be held in three other suburban districts in the capital later this year.
