Nanjing Massacre survivor dies at 100
Pu Yeliang, a Nanjing Massacre survivor, died on Monday at the age of 100. Pu's death reduced the number of registered survivors to 59, the Memorial Hall for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders said. The Nanjing Massacre took place when Japanese troops captured the city on Dec 13,1937. Over six weeks, they killed about 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers in one of the most barbaric episodes of World War II.Pu's two cousins were killed during the massacre, and Pu was caught by the invaders and forced to do hard labor for them. He later escaped and survived the massacre. Pu was the second Nanjing Massacre survivor to die this year. On Feb 24, Zhu Zaiqiang, who witnessed and survived the atrocities, died at the age of 90. The Chinese government has preserved the survivors' testimonies, recorded in both written documents and video footage.
BEIJING
More than 290 million students last year
About 291 million students were receiving education at schools in China at the end of last year, the Ministry of Education said on Tuesday as it released a series of education-related statistics. It said the country had 529,300 schools and academic institutions of all levels and sorts last year. The ministry added that there were roughly 18.44 million full-time teachers in China by the end of last year, an increase of about 500,000 compared to 2020.
