Exclusive: A dialogue with Tang Wensheng

This year marks the 50th anniversary of former US president Richard Nixon's visit to China and the Shanghai Communique.

China Daily held a dialogue with Tang Wensheng, the interpreter for Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai during Nixon's visit and the previous visits of Henry Kissinger.

Tang is also the adviser to All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and former deputy editor-in-chief of China Daily.

What are some of Tang's most striking memories of the visits? What are the stories behind the "Ping-pong diplomacy”, which was another very famous chapter in the background of China-US relations? And what is the role of the media in China-US relations?

Watch this video.
