A public welfare initiative calling for volunteers from all over the country to donate hair to make wigs for children with cancer, have has brought a lot of comforted, organizers said.

The program — the Black Ribbon Initiative — was initiated by Chongqing University Cancer Hospital in April. Twenty-three students joined in the first round of hair donations to help children who had lost their hair as a result of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

In January 2020, 3-year-old Liu Lizi from Guizhou province was diagnosed with blastoma, a type of cancer. The girl, who received radiation therapy at the hospital, was depressed after losing her beautiful natural hair and being mocked by other children.

"For cancer patients, especially those little cancer patients, hair is hope," said Lai Yun, a volunteer at the hospital.
