Lawmaker-elect Simon Lee Hoey on Tuesday said he'll focus on policy areas related to the city's economic development in his term of office.

Hong Kong has solid strengths in scientific research, but the city lacks the capability to commercialize these research achievements or results, according to Lee.

Lee believes it requires strong government support to create an environment where the academia, business sector and research and development institutions and relevant government authorities can work together.

He added that the first thing he plans to do after he's sworn in to assume office is to reach out to officials of different bureaus and departments on commercialization of research achievements.

The lawmaker-elect also said that the city's democratic development enters a new chapter after the Legislative Council election was held on Sunday under the city's revamped electoral system.

He pointed out that some Western countries tried to point fingers about the state of affairs in Hong Kong, calling the West's accusations ungrounded and farcical.

Lee was referring to the so-called "grave concerns" expressed by the Five Eyes alliance, the European Union and the Group Seven over the city's LegCo election results. The West doesn't understand how the democratic system operates in Hong Kong and they are arrogant to believe only their model works, Lee said.
