LONDON - A new survey has revealed that gun purchases accelerated in the United States in 2020-2021 compared to 2019, The Guardian has reported.

More than 5 million adults became first-time gun owners between January 2020 and April 2021, up from 2.4 million adults in 2019, the British newspaper reported Monday, citing a study conducted by Matt Miller, professor of epidemiology at Northeastern University, and published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Overall, the survey shows, the number of gun purchases grew from 13.8 million to 16.6 million between 2019 and 2020, when about half of the new gun owners were female and nearly half were people of color.
