Professor Hua Yan, head of Ophthalmology of Tianjin Medical University, vice president of the Asia Pacific Ophthalmic Trauma Society and head of China Ocular Trauma Society, has initiated the publication of the Guideline for the Treatment of No Light Perception Eyes Induced by Mechanical Ocular Trauma.

In December of this year, Yan led the China Ocular Trauma Society and Tianjin Medical University to cooperate with the Center for Evidence-based Medicine of Lanzhou University to formulate the "Guideline for the Treatment of No Light Perception Eyes Induced by Mechanical Ocular Trauma", and successfully registered it on an international practice guide registration platform as IPGRP-2021CN176.

The expert group, which consisted of more than 53 top experts and world-renowned scholars from 10 countries in the fields of clinical and basic ophthalmology, took 6 months to finish the project. It is highly international and authoritative. The Medicine Center of Lanzhou University/WHO Collaborative Center for Guidelines Implementation and Knowledge Transformation is the only WHO collaborative research center in the world for the development, research and implementation of guidelines. With high professionalism and credibility, it provided a professional platform and methodological support for the development of the guideline.

To solve the problem of a lack of a unified standard for the treatment of ocular trauma in no light perception eyes domestically or internationally, the guideline development team strictly follows international norms and standard procedures for WHO guideline formulation, and applied the Delphi expert survey method to select 16 key clinical problems for the treatment of mechanical ocular trauma with no light perception which were confirmed by the guideline consensus expert group.

Treatment of ocular trauma with no light perception has always been challenging. It is generally believed that the value of surgical treatment is lost when visual function is severely damaged to the point of loss of light perception after ocular trauma, and removal of the eyeball is inevitable.

As a pioneer in this field, Yan has been dedicated to the research of ocular trauma for decades. He has taken the lead in carrying out surgical treatment of complicated ocular trauma with no light perception. In the past few decades, he has treated a considerable number of patients with complicated ocular trauma with no light perception from all over the world and has seen good results, bringing hope to them.

After collecting, evaluating, and synthesizing relevant domestic and foreign evidence according to the GRADE method for evidence classification and recommendation, the consensus expert group reached a consensus with recommendations for the 16 key clinical problems, and principles and methods for the treatment of complicated ocular trauma with no light perception were standardized.

With great guiding significance, it is the world's first guideline for the treatment of ocular trauma with no light perception, providing guides for the clinical work of global ophthalmologists.

As the organizer of the guideline, Yan has focused on clinical and basic research on ocular trauma for decades, dedicated himself to the standardized diagnosis and precise treatment of ocular trauma, made remarkable achievements and played an international leading role, especially in the technology and treatment of complicated ocular trauma with no light perception.

Invited by Springer, he edited the world's first series of six monographs on ocular trauma and was highly praised by experts, including Ferenc Khun, the president of World Ocular Trauma Society, and S. Natarajan, the president of Asia Pacific Ophthalmic Trauma Society. At the same time, he led the formulation of the "Expert Consensus on the Treatment of Mechanical Ocular Trauma No Light Perception Eyes in China" in 2020.
