Barrow announced winner in Gambia election

Adama Barrow has been announced winner of the 2021 Gambia presidential election held on Saturday, according to the country's electoral commission.

The Independent Elections Commission (IEC) declared Barrow, the leader of the National People's Party (NPP), the winner when announcing the results broadcast on Gambia National Television on Sunday.

According to the announcement, the incumbent president obtained 457,519 of the votes cast, while his main challenger, of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainou Darboe, obtained 238,253.

It remains unclear whether Darboe will challenge the process due to earlier refusal of the results. Darboe and his UDP have been contesting elections since 1996 and never won. This will be his last chance due to age.

Election observers from the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States and the European Union were in the country to monitor the process.

Barrow was first voted Gambian president in 2016, defeating his predecessor, Yahya Jammeh, who has been living in Equatorial Guinea in exile.
