Wang said she discovered Jha's strength through the joint training and was looking forward to the competition. She also feels fortunate to be part of the transnational team.

"Being able to cooperate in Houston with Kanak and compete as transnational mixed doubles team, it is an opportunity for myself to cooperate as a Chinese athlete with an American athlete. I hope by going all out to play each game, we can make our story history in Houston," she said.

American player Lily Zhang said she felt lucky to pair with top player Lin Gaoyuan. "I could learn a lot by training with the Chinese athletes. I hope we will do our best and get good results."

The significance of such pairing wasn't lost on her either.

"It's really an incredible feeling to be a part of this huge moment in history. I know that Ping-Pong Diplomacy has helped both of our countries, China and the US, get along very well in the past. So, to be able to be part of it now is truly special and I really love that the sport is able to transcend all boundaries and bring us together," Zhang said.
