President Xi Jinping called on Monday for global media to make contributions to promoting the common values of humanity and advancing the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Xi made the remark in a congratulatory message delivered to the fourth World Media Summit, which opened on Monday in Beijing. The meeting, which focused on media development strategy amid the pandemic, was hosted by Xinhua News Agency.

Xi noted that today's world is facing profound changes unseen in a century, and the COVID-19 pandemic is still raging worldwide. Both of these situations are interwoven, and the international landscape has undergone a profound and complex evolution, he added.

Given this situation, the media shoulder important social responsibilities for responding to the call of the times and building up the broadest possible global consensus, Xi said.

He expressed his hope that participants in the meeting could enhance their consensus and strive to work as communicators and promoters of cultural and people-to-people exchanges around the world.

The World Media Summit was co-initiated by nine media organizations with global influence, including Xinhua, News Corp, the Associated Press, Reuters, TASS Russian News Agency, Kyodo News and the BBC.
