More than 100 cygnets and large numbers of other migratory birds have been observed nesting in the wetlands of Shahu Lake in Shizuishan, Ningxia Hui autonomous region.
The wetland area of the lake has expanded by 400 hectares since 2017. As its ecological system has improved, the lake has become an important stopover for migratory birds. Every year, more than a million birds perch at the lake, including endangered species such as the white-tailed sea eagle.
The number of bird species counted at the lake has reached 198, according to the local government.
