After the reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Straits, peace and tranquility in Taiwan will be fully guaranteed and people' well-being will fully improve, a senior mainland official on Taiwan affairs said.

Liu Junchuan, deputy director of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, described how Taiwan residents would benefit from the reunification of the sides, in his video address at a seminar on national unification and rejuvenation on Friday.

He called on Taiwan compatriots to have a thorough grasp of the general trend of historical development and realize that Taiwan's future and interests depend on the reunification of the country.

"A strong country, national rejuvenation and reunification across the Taiwan Straits are the trend of the times," Liu said, adding that the historic task of complete reunification of the motherland must and will be realized.

"Despite the complex situation across the Straits, the mainland has always taken the initiative in resolving the Taiwan question," he said.

The official said that after reunification, peace and tranquility in Taiwan will be fully guaranteed, and the way of life, private property, religious belief and legitimate rights and interests of Taiwan compatriots will be protected.

"Taiwan compatriots who support national reunification and rejuvenation will truly be masters of the country, participate in the island's governance and the development of the motherland, and enjoy the benefits of development," Liu said.

The well-being of Taiwan compatriots will be improved, he said, adding that "Taiwan's fiscal revenue can be used to improve people's well-being."

Cross-Straits exchanges will become more convenient, and there will be broader opportunities for Taiwan compatriots, especially young people, to come to the mainland for development, he said.

Liu said after reunification, compatriots in Taiwan will expand their foreign exchanges and enjoy stronger international confidence, greater security and dignity.

"Together with the compatriots on the mainland, they will participate in global governance and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind," he said.

Liu said that peaceful reunification of the motherland best serves the overall interests of the Chinese nation, including the Taiwan compatriots.

He called on people in Taiwan to firmly stand on the right side of history and contribute to the reunification of the country.
