A Chinese mainland spokesman warned the United States on Thursday not to create trouble in the situation in the Taiwan Straits, after US State Department officials met with Taiwan "representatives".

On Wednesday, the official Twitter accounts of the US State Department posted photos and tweets of Undersecretary of State Jose Fernandez and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink meeting with "Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative" Hsiao Bi-khim.

It was claimed in the tweets the US commitment to Taiwan remains rock-solid, and the US will further strengthen ties with Taiwan.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, urged the US not to conduct any form of official exchanges with Taiwan and not send any wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" forces.

He said the US government should abide by the one-China principle and its serious commitment to China on the Taiwan issue.

He warned that attempting to seek "independence" by colluding with foreign forces would only bring disaster to Taiwan.
