A total of 1,763 cultural relic sites in the province, including the famed ancient town of Pingyao, are under repair as of noon on Sunday due to heavy downpours, the provincial cultural relics bureau said on Monday.

They include 177 sites under key national-level protection and 137 under provincial-level protection that are facing landslides from surrounding slopes and other dangers, according to the bureau.

China's National Cultural Heritage Administration will send experts to the province to assess the damage and oversee salvage efforts, said administration head Li Qun at a Monday conference.

The administration will also allocate emergency funds to ensure cultural artifacts in the province are protected from further damage, Li added.
