13 dead, 1 still missing in N China bus accident

Thirteen people were killed and one remains missing after a commuter bus carrying 51 people fell into a river in North China's Hebei province, provincial authorities said on Monday night.

The accident occurred shortly after 7 am at Wangmu Bridge across the Hutuo River in Pingshan county of Shijiazhuang, the Department of Emergency Management of Hebei province said.

The remaining 37 people are alive and 7 of them are being observed at a hospital.

The bus belongs to a company based in Pingshan county. Rescue efforts are now underway.

The bus driver has been put in police custody and a further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has sent a working unit to assist with emergency response efforts on-site.

The working unit will guide efforts to investigate and handle the accident, the MPS said.
