In 1951, the Central Research Institute of Culture and History was built by the central government for the senior and most respectable intellectuals at the State level. In later years, institutes for the same purposes were also built at provincial and municipal levels across the country. These honorary bodies have gathered preeminent individuals of every era, including many accomplished painters and calligraphers.

An ongoing exhibition at the National Museum of China in Beijing until Oct 17 marks the 70th anniversary of the Central Research Institute of Culture and History and the centennial of the Communist Party of China.

On show are works by figures awarded with fellowships over the past decade at research institutes of all levels, as well as works by notable artists who maintain a close relations with the Central Research Institute of Culture and History.
