Hong Kong's exports, imports maintain double-digit growth in August

HONG KONG - The values of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods in August this year both recorded year-on-year increases by 25.9 percent and 28.1 percent respectively, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said Tuesday.

According to the figures released by the Census and Statistics Department of the HKSAR government, for the first eight months of 2021 as a whole, the value of total exports of goods increased by 29.0 percent over the same period in 2020, year-on-year, while the value of imports of goods increased by 26.9 percent.

A spokesperson of the HKSAR government said that the value of merchandise exports sustained notable year-on-year growth of 25.9 percent in August, with exports to the mainland, the United States, the European Union and many other Asian economies showing visible increases.

For the first eight months of 2021 as a whole, the total merchandise trade value amounted to HK$6,509.9 billion ($836.49 billion), surpassing the high in the same period in 2018 by 12.8 percent, the spokesperson added.

Looking ahead, the spokesperson said, the global economic recovery and vibrant regional trade flows should continue to support Hong Kong's export performance in the near term, and warned that the pandemic is still casting uncertainties on the economic outlook.
